Sloppy Joe
A comforting American classic: savory beef cooked with onion, celery, peppers and a rich tomato sauce, served on a soft bun.

Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 cup diced celery
- 1/2 green pepper, chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 cup water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons vinegar
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon chopped parsley
Instructions
- Heat oil in a 3-quart saucepan. Sauté onion, celery, and green pepper until softened.
- Add ground beef and brown thoroughly, breaking up any large pieces.
- Stir in garlic and cook briefly until fragrant.
- Add ketchup, water, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, dry mustard, paprika, chili powder, and parsley. Stir to combine.
- Simmer uncovered for 30 minutes with a splatter shield, stirring occasionally.
- Serve hot on hamburger buns or open-faced.
Note: Sloppy Joes are traditionally served on soft hamburger buns, but can also be served open-faced with a knife and fork.
